Both land-based and internet gaming brought in a total of DKK 552m ($72m) for the nation in August, but the latter has grown while the former has declined.

The Danish Gambling Authority (DGA) said in August that of the four categories it monitored, online casinos generated the most revenue.

The amount of DKK 233m generated by this category is 6% more than DKK 221m from the previous year. In contrast, land-based casinos only brought in DKK 29 million, a 10% decline from the previous year.

Even badly did gaming machines perform. These brought in DKK 98 million in August, but that's a 13% decrease from DKK 113 million the previous year. Revenue from betting increased by 50% during this time. August production for this section increased to DKK 192m from DKK 128m.

On the other hand, year-to-date revenue growth for online casinos has slowed, and betting has decreased, while land-based gambling has recovered more from COVID-19.

Though this is compared to 2021 when casinos were closed from January through April, brick and mortar casinos made DKK 226 million in revenue during the first eight months of 2022—an increase of nearly 120% year over year.

Similar to this, gaming machines have seen a return. For the first eight months of 2022, they brought in DKK 759 million, a 97% year-over-year increase.

However, revenue growth at online casinos has slowed to a standstill. This segment generated DKK 1.9bn from January to August, a 0.5% increase.

Compared to the 15% rise reported for the same period last year, this is a far smaller amount. Meanwhile, there has been a 7% decline in GGR in betting.

In addition, Denmark legalised online gambling in 2022, a move that the DGA recently praised as a triumph.
